Poor kitty, from UTI to periferal nerve injury!

This weekend has just been like one big day that has not ended for our kitty Raskal.  He definitely has another UTI, or the Vet said its quite possible it just didn’t clear up entirely.  Saturday night we had to take to the after hours emergency clinic around 1:30 in the morning because he wasn’t urinating, he was holding it in having spasms.  Hubby went to bed, but I couldn’t leave him out here in the kennel cage and sleep knowing he had not gone.  What if something happen in the middle of the night?  Which it did.  He was lethargic and non-responsive to me,  was just starring off into space, his eyes rolled a few times.  I got hubby up out of bed and help me get him out of the kennel, was going to try putting him in the tub and rub his side to relax him hoping he go, but he was growling and hissing at us.  Not good.  So we went to the clinic.  They had two emergency surgeries to do so they checked for obstruction and expressed his urine and sent us home with a sample of what they expressed to take to our Vet yesterday.  I made the appointment and we went at 4:00 and was there until 5:30.  We got home at 5:45.

It was not the usual guy we see and have to tell you not happy with who we did have either.  Not only did he call us liars in his round about way of how much we feed our cat (he weighs 20.5 pounds), which is 1/4 cup in morning and 1/4 in evening, (at 5 and again at 5) he didn’t listen to what we were saying like the change in his food.  He wants us to try another formula of science diet (c/d) and feels the 14 day antibiotic shot that was given to him before may not of worked as good as the medicine claims to work, so this time gave him a shot of penicillin and we have to take him back again Thursday for another shot of penicillin.    He didn’t do vital checks or temperature check either!   He came in and while giving Raskal this shot in his hind leg/paw area, Raskal moved on him (more than a flinch) but the needle was already inserted and just pushed the medicine through.

At 6:05pm I called the office back, Raskal was not acting right.  His body was having spasms like when he has to urinate and is holding it and he was walking funny, the side where he got the shot, he was walking flatfoot and it was bent in.  I was crying, something was wrong.  The girl who answered the phone didn’t even go ask the Vet just said oh its probably normal and said call back tomorrow if not better.  He laid down but around 7:20 we were off to the after hours emergency clinic again because he would not urinate and his back end just collapsed!   We thought he was having reaction to the medication or something else was off.

They took his vitals and temp and all was good. He tinkled on the way there in the carrier (they gave us a bag to put our blanket in and gave us a pad for him for on the way home) and checked his bladder and the size was good and he went again.  She checked his leg area and said he had muscle pain and periferal nerve injury from the injection.  She said she thinks it just temporary but to keep him well rested over the next few days.  She wondered why they gave him the shot there instead of sub-q.  I thought he might of had reaction to shot but she said no, in December he had penicillin but she gave sub-q.

We are suppose to take him back Thursday for another shot and all I know is I don’t want that VET who seen him yesterday doing it and I rather they gave to him sub-q, and not like this again.  Today while cleaning his liter box and putting fresh litter in he was out a little and its a little bit better, but to see his paw inward like that, just breaks my heart.  I hope this isn’t permanent.  :-(

Last night and this morning he had really huge spots where he tinkled, I mean huge so guessing that is a good sign.  He ate the sample of the c/d they gave u so far.  Hoping he will continue to eat it.  We may have to move their castle out to the sun room and put the kennel in the corner until he has adjusted to eating this food, so he learns its all he is going to get.  I guess once a male kitty has a UTI, it can be an on going issue and this food keeps crystals from forming.   Hubby is the weaker one with caving than I am.  We tried the other formula mixing it but Raskal smart, he just ate the regular Cat Chow and moved the other pieces out of the way!  He didn’t eat not one, he take the food he liked out of the dish eat it and go back.  (when they told us to mix it to slowly adjust him to the new one).  Vet said if he is hungry he will eat it.  He also said we can give him low fat milk since he tends to play in his water more than drink it too.

I just feel so bad for our kitty.  This is the first time in all the years I have had a kitty to have a male kitty who had UTI issues.  Bless his heart.  My whisper never had one and he lived 17.5 years!  As far as Raskal weight, I mean he is a big kitty this vet goes I bet he just sleeps all the time.  NOT he plays, ask Twinkle and Misty who scream all the time when he sits on them LOL.  He plays fetch with us, loves his ball with the bell in it.  He is very active.  He is just a big boy!  If he losses weight I don’t see his paws shrinking here!

Poor Raskal! I feel so bad for the guy. I hope they get him straightened out and feeling better soon.

Bubba has been eating the C/D food for close to a dozen years now since he had his crystalizing issues and had to have his surgery to fix the problem. He is on the Hills Prescription Diet Feline C/D kind. He refused to eat a couple of them at first until they finally tried him on that one. It’s super expensive when they have to be on these special foods, but I have found a place online where I can get it cheaper than the vet.
